Imperialism
Vocabulary:
Annex- to incorporate into an existing political unit, such as a city or country
Assimilation- a policy in which a nation forces or encourages a subject people to adopt its institutions and customs
Berlin Conference- 14 nations met in Berlin, Germany to divide Africa, each country got part of Africa--Never asked Africa first
Capitalism- when the people (not government) decide what is bought and sold, and set the price in an economy.
Colonists- the people that take over a country.
Colonized- the people that have been taken over.
Direct Rule- colonial government in which local elites are removed from power and replaced by a new set of officials brought from the colonizing country
Dollar Diplomacy- the diplomacy that seeks to strengthen the power of a country or effect its purposes in foreign relations by the use of its financial resources
Elitism- one group of people thinks they're better than everyone else.
Exploitation- the action of treating someone unfairly in order to gain an unfair advantage for oneself.
Imperialism- the extension of a nation's power by taking over another country.
5 Major Imperialism Nations: Great Britain, France, Germany, Japan, and Russia
Indigenous- native to a region
Indirect Rule- a colonial government in which local rulers are allowed to maintain their positions of authority and status
Protectorate- a political unit that depends on another government for its protection
Racism- the belief that race determines a person's traits and capabilities
Sepoy- an Indian soldier hired by the British East India Company to protect the company's interests in the region
Sepoy Mutiny- 1857--revolts, Sepoy killed hundreds of British people because there were rumors that the gun cartridges were greased with cow fat (Sepoy people had to open the cartridges with their teeth)
Social Darwinism- a stronger society takes over weaker societies. According to this theory, this is a natural process that should occur.
Sovereignty- the authority of each national government over the land & people within its borders.
Sphere of Influence- areas in which foreign powers have been granted exclusive rights and privileges, such as trading rights and mining privileges
Surplus- having extra goods and materials
Viceroy- a governor who ruled as a representative of a monarch
Other Information:
Old vs. New Imperialism- Old imperialism was when countries cam in a took everything then left--New imperialism is when countries would go in and set up a new government in that country
Disrespecting a Sepoy- saluting with left hand (wiping hand)
