Unit 4: Energy of Bonds
Bond- the force that holds atoms together in a compound, formed from gaining, losing, or sharing electrons
Chemical Formula- tells what elements a compound contains and the exact number of each atom
Covalent Bond- form when 2 non-metals share electrons (neither element is "strong enough" to steal an electron to fill its outer shell, so instead, they share electrons)
* form between 2 non-metals
* electrons are shared
* strength of bond is much weaker than ionic
Ionic Bond- bonds formed between metals and non-metals, also know as oppositely charge ions
* form between metal and non-metal
* electrons are transferred
* very strong
* result of this bond: zero net charge
